FAQs
Should I prepare any material ahead of time?
The “Quickie” is a festival that celebrates the spontaneous nature of theatre. There is no need to make any preparations of material ahead of time. All you have to do is get plenty of rest beforehand and be ready to have fun!
What should I expect on the day of the festival?
The festival begins with a meeting where you will be placed in groups and receive important schedule information. During the meeting, you will have the opportunity to ask questions, meet with your group and have a brief planning session. Your group will be assigned limited free rehearsal time in the Roy Arias Off-Off Broadway Playhouse. Any additional rehearsal space is the responsibility of the group members. In the past, groups have rented studios, rehearsed at home or even in the park! Each group will work differently and there is no right or wrong way to create and rehearse your play. On the day of the performance, there will be a cue-to-cue. Punctuality is essential and groups must arrive fully prepared and ready to do a run-through.
Will my play be featured in both performances?
Each play will be featured in ONE of the performances. Shortly, you will be sent an e-mail telling you whether you are part of the 6:00 PM or the 8:00 PM performance so that you can invite family and friends.
Do festival participants need to buy tickets to see the performance?
Directors and writers will be able to see their performance for free (actors will, of course, be backstage!). Seating for the performance your play is NOT featured in will be granted based on audience availability.
Should my friends and family buy tickets ahead of time?
YES! There is a very limited amount of seating in Roy Arias “Off-Off Broadway” venue and it is best to buy tickets ahead of time to ensure your friends and family will be able to see the performance. Advance sale tickets are available through smarttix.com. Please be aware that ticket sales will be CASH ONLY at the door.
Will I have the opportunity to go home at any time during the festival?
Many groups are able to budget time for participants to go home, but this is at the discretion of your particular group members. We suggest that you come to the festival dressed comfortably and bring a small bag with any essentials you might need (i.e. a toothbrush, a change of clothes, stage makeup, etc.) in the event that you are not able to go home. It’s important to make yourself totally available to your group.
What if I don’t live in New York City?
You should make arrangements to remain in the city for the duration of the festival. We do our best to help all out-of-town participants find in-city accommodations (often with a group member), however, we cannot guarantee this and each out of town participant is ultimately responsible for their own lodgings.
What if we have questions or problems during the festival?
Groups will be assigned a “camp counselor”, i.e. a member of the Tip My Cup staff who will be in contact with you until the performance to answer any questions or help with any problems you may have during the festival.
Can we use costumes and props?
Due to time constraints, most groups make limited use of both costumes and props. However, what you choose to use in your scene is up to you. Each group is responsible for providing their own costumes and props and Tip My Cup Productions is not responsible for the loss or damage of any personal items.
What about technical capabilities?
At the beginning of the festival, each group will receive a full list of technical specs for the Roy Arias Off-Off Broadway Playhouse. Groups will be responsible for providing the technical director with a list of their technical requests. We will do our best to accommodate your specifications, but remember: because of limited dress rehearsal time, it’s best to keep your lighting and sound designs simple!
Will video be taken of the performance and, if so, can I get a copy?
YES! Tip My Cup Productions will video tape the performances and DVD copies will be available for $15.00 each. You will be able to fill out order forms at any time during the festival. Friends and family will be able to place orders at the performance. Delivery will take approximately 6 weeks.
